Voice of the Reddies wins sportscaster award

ARKADELPHIA -- Phil Elson, the Voice of Henderson State football was named Arkansas Sports Broadcaster of Year by the National Sports Media Association, executive director Dave Goren announced on Tuesday.

Sportscasters and Sportswriters of the Year from 49 states, plus the District of Columbia, will be honored during the 59th annual NSMA Awards Weekend, June 23-25, 2018, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Elson has served as the play-by-play Voice of the Reddies as part of the Henderson State Sports Network for the past seven seasons. He has been on the call for several memorable seasons in Reddies football, history including three Great American Conference championships and all four NCAA Division II playoff games.

Aside from Reddies football, Elson also serves as the Voice of the University of Arkansas women's basketball and Razorback baseball.

Elson's career includes 21 years in professional baseball, including 14 years as the Voice of Arkansas Travelers. Elson also worked for baseball teams in Stockton, Calif.; Ogden, Utah; Helena, Mont.; Akron, Ohio; his hometown of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Fayetteville, N.C.

The 2009 Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year currently works for Fox Sports Arkansas and on occasion does professional voice-over work.
