Senator to address

HSV Democratic Club

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- District 31 State Sen. Joyce Elliott of Little Rock will speak at the quarterly meeting of the Democratic Club of Hot Springs Village at 4 p.m. Friday at the Coronado Center, 150 Ponderosa Drive. A social hour that will offer appetizers and beverages begins at 3 p.m.

Elliott, a teacher for 30 years, was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in November 2000 and to the Arkansas Senate in November 2008. Elliott is expected to discuss the commitment she shares with state Sen. Jim Hendren, R-Sulphur Springs, to addressing race in the state, the importance of the resistance movement and the overall state of politics in Arkansas, especially in the Arkansas legislature.

Last fall, Sens. Elliott and Hendren proposed the creation of a bipartisan subcommittee to look at how race affects policy and life in Arkansas. While the proposal was turned down, the two have vowed to continue the discussion.

Elliott's service on legislative committees includes Education, Judiciary, Commerce, Insurance and Commerce and Budget.

Her teaching career included schools in Arkansas, Texas, Florida and Minnesota. An Arkansas native, Elliott earned an undergraduate degree in English and speech from Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia and graduate degree in English from Ouachita Baptist University.
