HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- The HSV Breakfast Lions Club recently held its annual Recognition Banquet to recognize Lions who served the community through fundraising and service activities.

Having donated $12,590 to specific sight-related charitable institutions such as the Lions Club International, World Services for the Blind, The Mid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service and Arkansas Lions Eye Bank and Laboratory, these institutions awarded 19 members of the club.

The celebration began with a self-catered social hour at Maderas Court building followed by dinner at the Diamante Club. Motivational speaker Laurie Cossar, of Toronto, Canada, spoke of 10 lessons she reminds herself of daily and encouraged the Lions to consider following these often difficult lessons of life.

The highest honor a club can bestow through Mid-South, named for their first president, is the Edward Dalstrom Distinguished Service Award. Recipients were Tom Brink, Dave Salmen, Dottie Stewart and Don Levac. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, received by Patti Smith from LCI, is named for the founder of LCI. It is the highest form of recognition embodying humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.

The Order of the Silver Cane received by Kevin Meacham, Sami Jo Magoffin, John Pritchard and Joanie Wiltgen is awarded by WSB to those who distinguish themselves in aiding the sight impaired and/or promoting sight conservation in the community. The WSB recognized Ken Henry, Bob Peterson and Jan Folstad with the Roy Kumpe Award for those who improved the community for sighted people as well as the blind.

The Crystal Cornea Awards were presented to Jan Peterson, JoAnne Corry and George Kittner, whose work helps the Eye Bank give the gift of sight. The Golden Lion Award presented by the club itself for the many behind the scene contributions was given to Donnella Otter and Audrey Findlen.

If working with like-minded caring, hard-working and fun-loving philanthropists interests anyone, the HSV Breakfast Lions Club meets at 7:45 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Call President Bob Peterson for further information: 574-360-2499.
