Register for Village Walk for Cancer Research

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Carolyn Hartnett grew up in Los Angeles and enjoyed life as a country girl, states the press release. She met her husband, Mike, at LA Tech when she was a freshman and they married after graduation. Hartnett has been a stay-at-home mom and office manager for a medical practice. The Hartnetts loved to travel and heard about the Village while on a trip to Colorado. They "checked out the Village" in 2001, bought a lot on the Granada golf course, built their dream home in 2010 and moved into it in 2011. "Life was good."

On July 8, 2013, Hartnett went in for a repeat mammogram and ultrasound due to a small lump with suspicious properties. On July 10, she had a biopsy and on July 11, the doctor confirmed that the lump was malignant. On July 12, she had a partial mastectomy to remove the tumor and a couple of lymph nodes. The official diagnosis was triple positive; estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2-positive. This type of breast cancer is particularly aggressive and tends to grow and spread faster than others.

After discussion with her oncologist, Hartnett went through mapping for radiation, one year of Herceptin infusions, 16 radiation sessions and Tamoxifen. She will continue the Tamoxifen as part of her treatment plan.

Cancer runs in Hartnett's family. Her father died of lung cancer at age 52; her brother is a Stage 4 melanoma survivor and her 98-year-old mother is a breast and stomach cancer survivor.

Hartnett is "cancer free at this time and feels blessed because it was caught so early. Mike and Carolyn will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in August and enjoy driving their red Corvette. She appreciates each day, is grateful for all the blessings in her life and doesn't sweat the small stuff. Life is good," continues the release.
