A Hot Springs man was arrested on a felony battery charge Sunday after allegedly assaulting his 72-year-old mother and threatening to kill both his parents.

Steven Brian Cole, 40, of 1182 Mountain Pine Road, was taken into custody shortly before 2:30 p.m. at his residence and charged with second-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Cole, who was on parole from a 2012 conviction for second-degree battery also involving an attack on his mother, was being held on zero bond and appeared Monday in Garland County Circuit Court. He also has a parole hold on him.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Garland County sheriff's Deputies Elwood McConnell and Ronald Gillespie responded to a residence in the city regarding a domestic battery that had occurred earlier in the county to meet the victim, who had come to that residence as a safe location to call for help.

The deputies spoke to a woman, 72, who had visible injuries to her left arm, who stated her son, identified as Cole, had attacked her earlier, holding her down on the bed and screaming at her. She said he put his body weight on her to keep her from moving, grabbed her by hair and shook her "back and forth" and grabbed her by the wrists, twisting her arms.

She said he also threw a can of soda at her, injuring her, and told her and her husband, 85, that if they called anyone or tried to leave he would kill them. She said the abuse has been going on for awhile and they were both afraid of him and believe he will kill them.

The woman reportedly refused medical attention but was complaining of pain to her head from the hair pulling.

Her husband reportedly confirmed seeing Cole shake the victim by her hair and twist her arms.

The deputies determined Cole was still at the couple's residence on Mountain Pine Road and went there and took him into custody.

Orders of protection were issued through Garland County Circuit Court Monday, barring Cole from contact with either victim. In their petitions for the order of protection, both victims stated Cole had threatened to kill them and "make one of us eat the other." He had also allegedly threatened to kill his mother and "eat her face off."
