Garland County Library to host presentation on Arkansas wildflowers

Belinda Jonak, master naturalist and Garland County Library circulation clerk, will give a presentation on Arkansas Native Wildflowers at 10 a.m. Friday in the library auditorium at 1427 Malvern Ave. The program is free to attend, but registration is required.

Jonak's program will include a photo slideshow and information on native plant identification. Jonak will discuss the value of native plants in gardening and landscaping, emphasizing the good qualities native flora have over imported plants.

According to Jonak, "a weed is just a plant in a place where you don't want it. Choosing native varieties of plants is wise because those plants are already acclimated to our climate and will likely fare much better in the long run."

Jonak has been a member of the Diamond Lakes Chapter of the Master Naturalists for several years where she has completed multiple community service projects and taught and attended many educational programs about Arkansas native plants and animals. Her past experience includes time as a teacher of biology and zoology at National Park College, a docent at the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu and an employee of the Fort Worth Zoo. Jonak has been employed at the Garland County Library since 1999.
