Colonial Dames to hear

about 'Child Migrants'

The Col. John Washington Chapter Colonial Dames 17th Century will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hot Springs Country Club. Sheila Beatty will speak on "Child Migrants: 349 Years of the Forced Migration of Children."

Beatty served as president of the Village Genealogical Society, is a member of 25 lineage societies, honorary Arkansas state president of the United States Daughters of 1812 and honorary Arkansas state regent of Daughters of the American Colonists. She is president of the Diamond Colony New England Women and VAVS chairman national for USD 1812.

Beatty is a life member of the Orphan Train Heritage Society of America, where she served on the national board of directors. Her interest in OTHSA was the result of her father, Edward Beatty, who was an orphan train rider in 1917 to Paris, Ark. In 2004, OTHSA honored her with its Charles Loring Brace Award for her work in preserving the history of the Orphan Train Riders. Beatty learned that her father's father was a British Home Child -- two generations of forced child migration. She is researching the Orphan Train Riders that were placed in Arkansas.

Any woman 18 years or over of good moral character is eligible for membership who can prove lineal descendant of an ancestor who lived and served prior to 1701 in one of the original colonies in the geographical area of the present United States of America. Lineal descendant shall mean direct legal blood descendant.
