Applications are now being accepted for the third annual Upcycle Sculpture Festival to be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hot Springs Farmers and Artisans Market, 121 Orange St.

All artists, art students, teachers and other interested adults may exhibit sculptures made from pre-used materials.

"This is a great contest to enter because there are no entry fees and there are lots of prizes. Work can be exhibited for sale and every year we also choose at least one of the entries to become part of our city's permanent art collection. Our goal is to eventually line the entire Greenway Trail with wonderful sculptures," said Dale Blackwelder, chairman of the Hot Springs Arts Advisory Committee, which sponsors the event.

Last year, 20 artists, 18 youths and groups signed up for the event. Their sculptures were made from discarded materials that were glued, hammered or welded together. Two pieces were acquired for the city at the 2017 event, "The Indian and Maiden," both by John Mark Baker of Baker's Fabrication and Welding.

"The event is designed to raise awareness of the value of what people discard as trash every day. We want people to see how recycling can make our world more beautiful," Blackwelder said.

Artists must transport, set up and remove their art. Awards for top sculptures in six categories and a people's choice award will be presented at noon.
