Looking down, not up

Dear editor:

This is in response to Mike Nunn's letter of March 12:

Mr. Nunn, I agree that there are many "very intelligent scientists" who discuss the workings of outer space and other topics, but when I read or hear their comments about various subjects and use words like "maybe," "could be," or "perhaps," I am skeptical about trusting their so-called intelligence.

A recent case in point was NASA's Juno spacecraft making a photo flyby of the planet Pluto showing geometric cyclones at the north and south poles. Scientists said they were "blown away" when they saw the images and that their knowledge of the gas-dwarf planet had been changed. They can only speculate about the workings of the universe, but what concerns me is that so many laypersons accept their statements as fact without question.

Mr. Nunn, the biggest problem in our world today is that you and many others are searching for the real truth, but instead of looking up, you are looking down. Jesus told His followers that He was sent from above to give His life as payment for mankind's sins (Matthew 20:28) so that if you believe in Him you will live forever (John 3:16).

I don't know what Jesus looks like, but I do know His words are true (2 Timothy 3:16), He died for my sins (1 Corinthians 15:3), He rose from the grave (1 Thessalonians 4:14), and that I will see Him as He really is (1 John 3:2). I take all this by faith, just as you do, Mr. Nunn, in your quest to "understand the universe." Jesus is our Creator, according to John 1:3, so you need to search no further as to the question of "how we got here."

Sir, you asserted that Christians in general (and the late Billy Graham) were trying to take away your freedoms. If by that you are referring to the freedom of living your life devoid of God, to deny Jesus' sacrifice for you and to believe that kindness is the only virtue you need to go to heaven, then carry on! All we Christians can do is give you warning and pray for you (your name is on the list of the church I attend).

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), and "You can know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32).

Now that's real freedom!
