Maroon and gold standard: Lake Hamilton wins boys', girls' state championships

RUSSELLVILLE -- The boys' and girls' track and field teams for Lake Hamilton capped a standout season with a pair of team state championships on Thursday.

Lake Hamilton won the boys' and girls' Class 6A state titles Thursday as a number of student-athletes for the Wolves and Lady Wolves continued their top form. Both teams are coached by Karl Koonce.

Each team had a margin of at least 10 points in the final standings. The Wolves won first place in the boys' standings with 140.50 points. Texarkana was second with 129 and Benton was third with 106 with plenty of separation before Pine Bluff with 59.

The Lady Wolves took state with 100 points as Benton was second with 90. Other top teams, in order, were Sheridan, 86; Jonesboro, 85; Texarkana, 72; Russellville, 68; and El Dorado, 49.

Lake Hamilton will look to cap a top track season at the Meet of Champs in one week. The Wolves will host the event at Wolf Stadium.

Haze Farmer was among the team's top performers who continued to shine. Farmer won the boys' pole vault final by almost three feet.

Michael Harris and Hunter Johnson gave Lake Hamilton another 14 points by tying for second place. John Thomas Bardwell tied for fifth place.

Farmer also ran for the state champion 4x400-meter relay team in the final event of the state meet. The team included Knowledge Hood, Colby Swecker and Arkansas State signee Cody Weldon.

Hood also won the 400-meter dash and finished fifth in the finals of the 200-meter dash. Swecker took first place in the boys' 1600-meter run.

Weldon was the only member of both the 4x400-meter relay team and the state champion 4x800-meter relay team. Weldon ran with Skylar Davis, Abraham Liera and Dylan Stephens in the 4x800.

Davis won the individual 800-meter run, while Swecker and Weldon placed in the top six. Davis was also third in the 1600-meter run and Omar Ramos gave the Wolves second-place points in the 3200-meter run.

Central Arkansas football signee Will Burgess remained dominant in the boys' shot put, winning the event by more than three feet. Ray Hamp took fourth place in the event.

Edie Murray was among a busy team of Lady Wolves, taking first place in the pole vault, third place in the 200-meter dash and sixth place in the long jump. Grace Cole followed Murray in second place in the pole vault, as she did throughout the season, and teammate Mahayla Swayze finished in fifth place.

Arkansas signee Josie Carson won two of three duels with other top runner Gracie Hyde, of Benton. Hyde defeated Carson by less than four second in the 1600-meter run, but Carson won the 800-meter and 3200-meter events.

Carson was also a member of the first-place 4x400-meter relay team with Baylee Jenkins, Jenny Peake and Morgan Pruitt. Jenkins added fourth-place points in the 400-meter dash, Peake was seventh in the triple jump and Pruitt placed in the top six of the 800-meter, 1600-meter and 3200-meter events.
