U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, R-District 4, took an early, commanding lead over his two challengers Tuesday, pulling nearly 70 percent of the vote.

Westerman had 20,440 votes, or nearly 70 percent of the vote, compared to 8,421 votes for Hayden Shamel, a Democrat, and Libertarian Tom Canada, 522 votes, with 28 percent of the precincts statewide reporting.

In Garland County, Westerman had 11,865 votes, nearly 68 percent, to Shamel's 5,362 votes and Canada's 319 votes, with nearly 95 percent of the precincts reporting.

Before the polls closed, Westerman told The Sentinel-Record Tuesday started off early in Little Rock with several television and radio interviews before spending the day in Garland County visiting polling sites and visiting with poll workers.

"Of course, we can't even make it to all of them in Garland County and think of all across the fourth district how many people are out there," he said.

The big issues this campaign season, Westerman said, have been the economy and the low unemployment rate, "so there's a lot of really good things to talk about."

"As far as things that we'll continue to work on, dealing with health care and dealing with immigration, those are two of the big issues, but there's lots of other things," he said. "Personally, with me being on the Natural Resources Committee, a lot of issues on federal infrastructure and making sure our federal lands are managed properly" are his top priorities.

These issues, he said, he has not stopped working on even through the campaign season, including immigration and health care. Should the Democrats take back the House, Westerman said he does not think there will be a focus on these issues.

"I think there will be hearings on Trump and it might be better than a clown show for a couple years if they take it back," he said.
