Lakeside High School senior Logan Way will receive this year's college scholarship from Mid-America Science Museum during the 19th annual Taste of the Holidays.
Way has pursued his interests in biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and other fields of science study and research, with plans to become a pediatrician, according to a news release. He has logged more than 300 hours volunteering for special events and educational programs as a member of Team Tesla at the museum.
"Logan has been a Team Tesla volunteer at the museum since the beginning of the program three years ago," said Jim Miller, director of marketing for the museum. "Since then Logan has exhibited a strong work ethic, adaptability, and patience as a leader and compassionate member of his community. Logan strives to support science education both as a volunteer and as a student at Lakeside High School.
"By pursuing his interests and passion for science he has become an ambassador for Mid-America Science Museum and for the greater Hot Springs community. As this annual college scholarship award continues Mid-America Science Museum looks forward to highlighting the contributions of Hot Springs area students who are devoting themselves to a future of science learning and helping their community."
Way will be presented with the scholarship during a VIP reception Thursday, shortly before Taste of the Holidays, which will take place from 6-9 p.m.
Presented by Oaklawn Racing and Gaming, Tri-Lakes Liquor and TLI Print, this year's Taste of the Holidays will feature more than 30 food and beverage vendors from around Hot Springs, disc jockey performances by DJ Kramer and DJ Courier plus a silent auction featuring an eight-day European cruise for two courtesy of Viking River Cruises, along with unique experiences offered by DeLuca's Pizzeria, Will's Cinnamon Shop, Red Light Roastery Coffee House, unique art, and gifts.
"Taste of the Holidays is celebrating its 19th year at Mid-America Science Museum and is the museum's longest-running annual fundraiser during the holidays," Miller said. "Taste of the Holidays showcases a bountiful array of wonderful flavors that are available from some of the finest restaurants and food vendors in Hot Springs who show their support for the museum. Taste annually features an extravagant silent auction filled with one-of-a-kind experiences, gifts, art, and other unique items that are available for bidding. Last year's Taste of the Holidays grossed more than $50,000 for the science museum and supports Mid-America Science Museum's ongoing educational programming."
Miller said this year's event is a celebration for the museum in many ways with the opening of the Oaklawn Foundation DinoTrek -- the state's first and only permanent outdoor dinosaur exhibit -- and the approval of the museum's Full STEAM Ahead campaign in September which will fund the addition of a new exhibit gallery set to be completed by Labor Day 2019. The museum will also unveil its Science After School Pilot Program in January 2019 in partnership with Hot Springs School District.
"These new opportunities allow Mid-America Science Museum to continue engaging visitors to Hot Springs and the surrounding community with new and inspirational science programming and exhibits that will continue having a significant and lasting impact on the Hot Springs community capping off what has been a very exciting and transformative year for the museum and for the state of science education in Arkansas," he said.
