Schools honor veterans

Students throughout Garland County schools honored area veterans this week with several Veterans Day programs.

Two Vietnam veterans, Lonnie L. Tidwell and Vivian Gray Erichsen, received long-awaited high school diplomas from Lakeside High School thanks to the Arkansas Department of Education Rules Governing Diplomas for Veterans of World War II, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

In Arkadelphia, students at Central Primary School gave an impromptu "Thank You" to active duty troops viewing their program's live-broadcast while stationed in Poland.

Lake Hamilton High School students held a special reception for area veterans and later filled the auditorium to assembly a large paper American flag, while students from Fountain Lake Elementary thanked area veterans, many of whom were family members of students, with a special program.

"Honoring the Veterans who have made sacrifices for our country is very special to Fountain Lake Schools," said Katie Curry, principal of Fountain Lake Elementary. "This ceremony was very important because it allowed our elementary students learn about the true heroism of all military servicemen and women and to show honor for them on this special occasion."
