Lakeside takes 5A-South match at Sheridan

SHERIDAN -- Lakeside held on for a straight-set victory Tuesday at Sheridan in a competitive 5A-South conference match.

Lakeside head coach Rhonda Thigpen said the Yellowjackets "played tough at their home and rallied with us," but the Rams (14-3, 10-1) remained atop the conference standings with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 victory.

Maddie Trusty led the Rams with 13 kills, six digs, two assist blocks and two aces. Olivia Lawrence had 26 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. Lawrence also had three kills.

Other contributors included Claire Monte with four kills and four assisted blocks; Adachi Igbokidi, six solo blocks and three assisted; Molly Stineman, six digs and three aces; Lyca Steelman, five digs; Meghan Fuller Freeman, five assisted blocks, three kills and two aces; and Katie Ballard, four kills, one solo block and one assisted block.

Lakeside is scheduled for another road match today at Texarkana (8-13, 3-7) before closing the week on Saturday on the road again for a tournament at Conway.

* The junior varsity team won Tuesday in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18.

Natalie Jennings led the JV team with five aces, four assists and three kills. Macy Landry also had 10 digs.

The junior high team traveled to Little Rock Christian and took a straight-set victory, 25-20, 25-21. The junior Rams improved to 19-10-1.

The team was led by Abbie Thomas' six kills, six by Sarah Porter, five by Vivien Mardis and three by Libby Divers. Mady Davenport and Bethany Mode each chipped in two kills.

Annelise McAlister and Mardis made six and five assists, respectively. Porter had four blocks, Thomas had two and Mode made one.

Kaitlyn Threadgill added 15 digs.

The eighth-grade team fell in a tight two-set match, 25-21, 30-28.

Beau Kuhn had eight service points and two services points. Olivia Porter finished with seven points as the team dropped to 14-9.

Both teams are scheduled to host Bryant today.

Tigers beat Bisons in GAC soccer

ARKADELPHIA -- Ouachita Baptist's men's soccer team picked up a 4-1 victory against visiting Harding on Tuesday at Kluck Field.

Ouachita (4-4-1, 2-1 Great American Conference) had one of its best performances of the year with a high volume of shots. Noa Cuellar took a pass from Blain Hickman to score the opening goal of the game in the 12th minute.

The Tigers took advantage of a counter opportunity in the 35th minute when Jakob Cuellar crossed the ball to the middle of the pitch. Matthew Wallak finished off the sequence with a shot into the Harding goal.

Ouachita had three shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes of the second half. Abraham Lazo then connected with Hickman for the Tigers' third goal of the game.

Harding (6-3-1, 1-2) got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute, but Ouachita answered with a goal by Colten Clark.

Ouachita goalkeeper Matt Gutierrez finished the game with three saves.

The Tigers will be back in action on Oct. 11 at Kluck Field against Oklahoma Baptist (2-10, 1-2).

Shapiro earns GAC award nomination

ARKADELPHIA -- Henderson State's Nick Shapiro was nominated for the Great American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week award after leading the Reddies to the Battle for the Belt title earlier this week.

Shapiro finished with a three-day score of 6-under 206 to tie for second in the 17-team event at the Hot Springs Country Club.

Three others garnered nominations for their performances in Hot Springs. Southern Arkansas' Kevin Elder tied Shapiro for second place; Northwestern Oklahoma State's Tyler Berryhill tied the team's best score at the Battle for the Belt; Arkansas Tech's Andre Jacobs recorded a tournament-leading 15 birdies; and Southwestern Oklahoma State's Gustavo Tineo placed seventh.

The annual event served this year as the Central/Midwest Region Preview as Henderson will host the 2019 NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional Championship in May on the Hot Springs Country Club's Arlington Course.

Southeastern Oklahoma State senior Zach James won this week's award.

Southwestern senior Chloe Thackeray was named the GAC Women's Golfer of the Week after taking home medalist honors at the University of Central Oklahoma's UCO Classic. Also nominated were Arkansas Tech's Pia Nunbhakdi and Southern Arkansas' Mackenzy Turner.
