Hot Springs Flute Ensemble welcomes new conductor

The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble is introducing Carlos Feller as its new conductor, beginning with their fall concerts.

Feller teaches flute, theory, aural skills, and musicology at Ouachita Baptist University. He received his Doctorate of Music degree from Florida State University and holds an M.M. in flute performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and a B.M. from the School of Music and Fine Arts of Parana, Brazil.

Feller was a prizewinner in competitions such as the William T. Gower Concerto Competition, the Music Teachers National Association, and the Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition. He is a member of the ensemble Traverso Colore, a chamber group dedicated to historically informed performances on period instruments (Baroque flute-Traverso).

An enthusiast of new music for flute, Feller performed at the International Computer Music Conference in New Orleans, at the Michel Debost Composition Competition in Curitiba, Brazil, and at the XV Biennial Festival of New Music at Florida State University. He performs new music for flute ensemble frequently with the groups Music Unites and Super Flutes International Collective.

Feller has performed extensively in the U.S. and abroad. He was recently featured in international concerts in Brazil, Honduras, Dominican Republic, France and Switzerland. He serves as coordinator for the Newly Published Music Competition and is a member of the International Liaison committee for the National Flute Association, a news release said.

The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble will hold a fundraiser for the Garland County Humane Society at 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3819 Central Ave. Admission is by a donation to the Humane Society, either monetary or pet food or supplies.

The event is a "Hauntcert" and is Halloween themed with spooky music. There will be a Howl-oween Pet Parade of adoptable animals and door prizes throughout the event.
