The swamp deepens

Dear editor:

Some 33 percent of Trump's supporters are reported to be his Christian followers. It is hard to understand their blind support; articles in this column have said they know he does and says wild things but they still support him, citing numerous Biblical passages.

Other Biblical passages include Corinthians, "Bad company ruins good morals," and it also plainly says "But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler. ... " Most of these are Trump's recorded/documented actions, not judgments!

Trump's Sunday church is golfing at one of his luxury clubs; women are his property to use; lies are his operating procedures; he defines you by your gender, race, and looks; and money is his almighty alter! If you are going to mix your faith with politics you need to check out your partnership carefully.

All of our current national representatives blindly follow Trump to keep their jobs. We need new representatives, people who will vote with common sense and for true American values, not propping up huge corporations and the ultrarich.

The swamp has never been wider or deeper!

The turn of the tide

Dear editor:

"I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide." The White Wizard Gandalf spoke these words to his companions at a pivotal point in the popular movie, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers." I'm no White Wizard, but I am writing to you now, at the turn of the tide.

Sometime between Oct. 22 and Nov. 6, you will make a choice. You will choose to vote for GOP candidates, who will continue to rubber-stamp the Trump agenda, or you will vote for Democratic candidates, who will work to divert our state and country from the xenophobic, misogynistic, racist and climate-destroying path we are currently on.

Your vote has never been more important. Scientists are giving us as little as 20 years to make drastic changes, before the damage we have done to our planet's environment will become irreversible. Donald Trump and his party insist on ignoring the advice of experts and no member of the GOP, including our own Arkansas congressmen, has had the guts to stand up to him. We can all do our individual parts to combat climate change, but without the government oversight needed to curb the damage done by large corporations, the military and the government's own policies, our planet will become uninhabitable, not in some far-off science fiction future, but within many of our lifetimes and the lifetimes of our children.

There are many other reasons I plan to vote Democratic in the 2018 midterms, but it seems almost pointless to address them, given that if we don't act quickly to save our home, none of these other issues will matter.

All is not lost. We can turn the tide. I plan to vote for Hayden Shamel as my congressional representative in District 4, Jared Henderson for governor, and Kevin Rogers for state representative in District 22. Join me in voting for progressive, Democratic candidates all the way down the ballot. Time is running out, but it's not too late.
