Eagles soar with ground game

Cutter Morning Star trounced visiting Rose Bud, 46-12, Friday without attempting a pass from scrimmage.

The Eagles (1-1) racked up 342 yards rushing on 30 carries for an average of 11.4 yards per carry. The home offense only attempted three passes in the game with all coming on 2-point conversions.

Sophomore quarterback Sam Moore led the offense with 154 yards and four touchdowns on 12 rushing attempts. Moore also converted one of Cutter Morning Star's five successful 2-point conversions.

Junior Matthew Cook ran five times for 76 yards and converted a 2-point conversion on the ground. Sophomore running back Keshawn Blevins scored a touchdown and gained 67 yards on seven runs. Junior Daniel Brito rushed twice for 27 yards with one score.

Juniors Tyler Mace and Cameron Lockhart each made nine tackles on defense. Mace also intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards.

Mace converted three 2-point attempts, two on receptions and one on a run. Lockhart had 18 yards on four carries on offense.

Rose Bud dropped to 0-2 and has now been outscored 97-18 in the first two weeks following a 51-6 loss to Quitman (2-0) on Aug. 31.

The Eagles are scheduled to be back at home on Friday to face Magazine (0-2). The Rattlers had the week off after losing, 20-6, at Bigelow on Aug. 24 and being shut out, 33-0, at home on Aug. 31 against Mount Ida (2-0).

Bismarck pummeled

BISMARCK -- Bismarck enters its only off week this season after a punishing 58-27 loss on Friday at the hands of Poyen.

The Indians (2-0) scored 51 points in the first half to put the Arkansas Activities Association's sportsmanship rule into effect in the second half. They led 19-0 midway through the opening quarter.

Senior Dylan Clayton got the Lions (1-2) on the board with a 40-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Poyen scored again in the first quarter before the Lions answered early in the second quarter to make the score, 25-13.

Poyen tacked on three more scores before junior quarterback James Kegley scored for Bismarck on a 15-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. A successful 2-point conversion made the score 44-21.

The Indians scored again in the quarter to take a 51-21 lead into halftime.

The teams combined to score 13 points in the second half. Kegley hit senior Jordan Webb for a 14-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Bismarck began the season with a 28-22 home win against Cutter Morning Star (1-1) on Aug. 24 before losing, 35-29, to Baptist Prep (1-1) on Aug. 31 on a 31-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the game.

The Lions will start 3A-5 conference play on Sept. 21 against one of four new members of the conference, Camden Harmony Grove (2-1), which also has an off week scheduled this week. The Hornets narrowly lost, 52-50, at Junction City (1-1) on Aug. 24 and won, 22-14, at home against Bearden (0-1) on Aug. 31 before winning on the road, 30-28, Friday against Fordyce (0-2).

Atkins scores three times

in 4Q to down Magnet Cove

MAGNET COVE -- The Magnet Cove Panthers were shut out on offense Friday, but it took a fourth-quarter surge by Atkins to take a 20-0 win on the road.

Both teams were scoreless going into the final quarter Friday. Magnet Cove (1-1) entered the game off of an off week following a 28-18 win on the road on Aug. 24 at Mountain View (0-2).

Class 3A Atkins (3-0) finally took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard rushing touchdown. A five-yard touchdown run made it a two-score game with less than four minutes remaining in the game. The Red Devils scored the final touchdown of the game on a punt return with less than three minutes to play.

Magnet Cove is scheduled for a road game Friday at Mount Ida (2-0) before opening up 2A-5 conference play on Sept. 21 with a crucial game against England (1-1).
