Reddies run winning streak to 9 matches

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Henderson State volleyball team finished a perfect 4-0 over the weekend at the Union University Invitational to extend the team's winning streak to nine matches.

The current winning streak is Henderson's longest since 2006, when the Reddies won 13 consecutive contests. Their next match is today at 6:30 p.m. against Arkansas-Monticello (1-12) at home in the Duke Wells Center.

Junior Courtney Bolf, of Fort Worth, Texas, recorded 20 kills for the second time this season to lead Henderson (10-2) to an five-set victory against Belmont Abbey College (4-6) in the opening match on Friday. The Reddies twice came back from one set down to take the match, 20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 15-7.

Junior Danika Daum, of Kimball, Neb., finished with a season-high 11 assists. Reigning Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Gigi Garramone, from Highlands Ranch, Colo., paced the Reddies with 18 digs.

Henderson cruised to a three-set victory in the second match of the day. The Reddies dispatched Lane College (0-4), 25-13, 25-12, 25-9.

Bolf and freshman Tyasia McGruder, of Phoenix, Ariz., led the way offensively, with each player notching seven kills. Freshman Taylor Scalzi, of Flower Mound, Texas, had more than 20 assists for the third match in a row, finishing with 22.

A plethora of Reddies showed off their defensive prowess, as 14 players recorded a defensive dig. Junior Courtney Ahrns, of Harper, Texas, led all players with nine.

Henderson blitzed Christian Brothers, 3-0, and Union, 3-1, on Saturday. The Reddies showed off a balanced attack in the 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 win against Christian Brothers (5-6).

Bolf led the way with eight kills, while McGruder and junior Karlie Greene, of Spring, Texas, finished with six each. Junior Adrianna Hartmann, of Fredericksburg, Texas, and senior Zuzana Ondruskova, from the Czech Republic, each had five.

Hartmann and McGruder each made fix blocks. Scalzi made 22 assists and Garramone racked up 17 digs.

Henderson closed the tournament with a 25-16, 16-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory over the host team from Union (3-10).

Ondruskova led the way with a 14-kill, 15-dig double-double, while Bolf chipped in 13 kills and eight digs. Scalzi had a career-high 37 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double.
