Literacy tutor training offered during National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month. In appreciation for the ability to read, the Literacy Council of Garland County is hosting a literacy tutor training from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at 119 Hobson Ave. Lunch will be provided, so registering is important. Call the council at 624-7323 or email [email protected] and reserve a spot. The tutor event is free to interested potential tutors and current tutors who would like a refresher.

It will be led by Heather Powell, director of the Twin Lakes Literacy Council in Mountain Home. Formerly with the Arkansas Literacy Council as the state tutor trainer, she has a B.A. degree from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. She established and conducted a Laubach literacy program in 15 Department of Corrections units. Languages that she is semi-fluent speaking are Russian and German.

Eleven percent of the citizens of Garland County are illiterate. "Literacy tutoring is valuable to the community and a wonderful experience for the tutor and the trainer. If you have ever thought of volunteering for the Literacy Council, this would be a great time to explore what it is like to teach someone to read," states the press release.
