A Hot Springs man was arrested on a felony charge for allegedly having a sawed-off shotgun after Garland County sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting late Wednesday.

Derrel Greg Dodd Jr., 55, of 3300 Highway 7 north, was taken into custody at his residence shortly after midnight and charged with criminal use of a prohibited weapon, punishable by up to six years in prison. He remained in custody Friday in lieu of $2,500 bond and is set to appear Oct. 8 in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's Deputy Aaron Bowerman got a call of a possible shooting at the Highway 7 north residence and when he arrived on scene he saw a white male, later identified as Dodd, exiting the residence with blood on his face.

He said he detained Dodd until he could find out what was going on and Dodd told him he had shot his dog. Bowerman asked him where his wife was, and Dodd stated she was inside the house.

Bowerman entered the residence and spoke to the wife who reportedly stated she was not injured, but her dog was shot. The deputy spoke to Dodd again and he reportedly admitted he shot the dog with his sawed-off shotgun.

Dodd told Bowerman the gun was in the living room and the deputy recovered it, noting it was a double barrel, 12-gauge shotgun with a cut off wood stock. At that point, Dodd was arrested on the prohibited weapon charge.
