Garland County Master Gardeners choose Business of the Month

Garland County Master Gardeners honors a yard and business of the month from April to October.

April and October are the two most-challenging months to find nominees, due to long cold spells, too plentiful moisture, and brutal heat and drought preceding these two months, a news release said.

First Security Bank, 1759 Airport Road, was selected as April's winner because it "brightened many months of winter and is still providing cheer and beautiful color to anyone passing by the intersection of Airport Road and Marion Anderson," the release said.

The two beds adjoining the parking area are planted with flowering kale as a background for purple, light blue and yellow violas, with the same viola mix backed by soon-to bloom shrub roses, and ornamental grass. Azaleas have begun to bloom on the foundation bed surrounding the front entrance of the building.

The landscape design has been done by a local business, Lake Hamilton Nursery, which is owned by Will Culverson, who plants and maintains the area.

"The First Security landscape provides high impact in a modestly sized area and exhibits the example that less can be more. Many people driving by this location have appreciated the color during a long, gloomy winter. We encourage businesses to take advantage of any space available and help further beautify Garland County," the release said.

Email Carolyn Davis, [email protected], to nominate a yard or business for the awards. "We have a large area to cover so please help us find all its 'hidden treasures,'" the release said.
