Wolves secure 2nd consecutive conference championship

EL DORADO -- Lake Hamilton's senior high boys' basketball team locked up its second consecutive conference championship Tuesday with a 58-56 road win at El Dorado.

The Wolves moved to 12-0 this season in the 5A-South and 21-2 overall. They won the 6A-West regular season and conference tournament titles last season.

Senior Lane Kersey led the Wolves with 20 points. Fellow seniors Mondo Watkins and Kanaan Williams scored 13 and nine points, respectively.

Lake Hamilton has two wins this season against the second-place team in the 5A-South, Hot Springs (22-4, 10-2). The Wolves won, 39-36, at Trojan Fieldhouse on Jan. 15 and took an 83-65 home win at Wolf Arena on Friday.

Tuesday's victory over the third-place Wildcats (11-12, 7-5) was the final road game of the season for Lake Hamilton. The Wolves will host Texarkana (6-16, 3-9) on Friday and Benton (13-10, 6-10) on Tuesday before hosting the Class 5A state tournament the following week.

Girls

Lake Hamilton's senior high girls also maintained their lead atop the 5A-South conference standings Tuesday with a 48-42 double-overtime road win at El Dorado.

The Lady Wolves (17-6, 10-2) had a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and held a 19-18 advantage at halftime. The Lady Wildcats (16-8, 7-5) took a 28-27 lead into the final quarter, but it was tied 36-36 at the end of regulation.

Both teams scored four points to send the game to a second overtime at 40-all. The Lady Wolves outscored the hosts, 8-2, to take the win.

Sophomore Aspen Thornton was the leading scorer with 18 points. She had three rebounds and made six of the team's 11 steals as the Lady Wolves forced 16 turnovers and committed only five.

Senior Jenny Peake had 14 points and four rebounds, while fellow senior Nya Moody had 12 points and six rebounds. Senior Morgan Fincham and sophomore Tia Mullenix had five rebounds each.

The win kept Lake Hamilton one game ahead of Sheridan (21-3, 9-3), which lost both of its games to the Lady Wolves this season. Hot Springs (12-10, 8-4), Benton (14-11, 7-5), El Dorado and Lakeside (19-6, 6-6) are 3-6 in the standings with only two regular season games remaining.

Lake Hamilton will close out the regular season at home against Texarkana (9-17, 1-11) on Friday and Benton on Tuesday before hosting the state tournament.

Bismarck boys make

district quarterfinals

ROSBORO -- With four in double-figures, Bismarck's boys' basketball team took a 71-51 win over Fouke Monday night in the first round of the 3A-7 district tournament at Knight Fieldhouse.

The Lions (6-20) took control of the game early, pushing out to a 16-11 lead in the first eight minutes, but the Panthers (6-16) managed to cut the deficit to three at the half, 30-27. Bismarck imposed its will on the game in the third frame, outscoring Fouke, 20-8, to take a 50-35 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Dawson King paced the Lions with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. Andrew Webb added 14 points with three assists, two rebounds and two steals, whlie Collier Robertson put up 12 points with five rebounds and a pair of assists.

Ouachita Baptist football signee Dylan Clayton rounded out the top four scorers with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Josh Allsup added nine points with six assists and a pair of rebounds, while Alex Ventress had four points with two boards and two takeaways.

The Lions faced off against Prescott (16-4) Tuesday night in the second round, falling to the Curley Wolves, 75-49.
