Arkansas schedules Liberty

for 2022 football season

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Arkansas football program announced this week it has agreed with Liberty to play a non-conference game on Nov. 5, 2022, at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

It will be the first meeting between the two teams, as the Liberty program began in 1973 as Lynchburg Baptist College. The Flames are the second non-conference opponent announced for the Razorbacks in 2022, as Arkansas will travel to Provo, Utah, to take on BYU on Oct. 15.

The non-conference slate for Arkansas in 2019 includes Portland State, Colorado State, San Jose State and Western Kentucky. All four games will be played in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks are scheduled to host Kent State on Sept. 5, 2020, before beginning a home-and-home series at Notre Dame the following week. The return date with the Irish is scheduled for 2025 in Fayetteville.

Arkansas' announced non-conference scheduled in 2021 currently features Missouri State, Texas and Georgia Southern in three consecutive weeks that September. The Razorbacks are scheduled to host BYU in 2023 and start a home-and-home series with Oklahoma State in Stillwater in 2024 and Fayetteville in 2027.

Beck honored as SEC Legend

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Southeastern Conference announced Friday former Arkansas guard Corey Beck has been named a 2019 SEC Basketball Legend.

The 21st SEC Basketball legends class will be honored at the men's conference basketball tournament March 13-17 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. Each legend will be recognized at halftime of their program's first game of the tournament.

Beck had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the 76-72 victory against Duke in the 1994 national championship game. He was named to the 1994 NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team.

The Memphis, Tenn., native played from 1993-95 at Arkansas and was a 1995 All-SEC selection as he drained 49 percent of his 3-point shots, second on the school's single-season list, and handed out 207 assists, which ranks third. Both totals are records by a Razorback for a senior season.

Beck had 483 assists in his career, third on Arkansas' all-time list as he led the team in each of his three years. He went on to play in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers.

The 2019 Legends class includes Erwin Dudley, Alabama; Mike Mitchell, Auburn; Livingston Chatman, Florida; Jumaine Jones, Georgia; Johnny Cox, Kentucky; Wayde Sims, LSU; Justin Reed, Ole Miss; Lawrence Roberts, Mississippi State; Melvin Booker, Missouri; Carlos Powell, South Carolina; Mike Jackson, Tennessee; Antoine Wright, Texas A&M; and Derrick Byars, Vanderbilt.

LHJH out in CAJHC semifinals

CABOT -- Both of Lake Hamilton's junior high basketball teams were eliminated by the respective top seeds Wednesday in the semifinals of the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference tournament.

The junior Lady Wolves (18-8) were seeded fourth in the tournament, but they were eliminated, 50-37, by No. 1 seed Conway Blue at Cabot South. They were held to five points in the first quarter and trailed, 26-5, at halftime.

"We got in foul trouble early," said Lake Hamilton junior high coach Maribeth Richards. "During the second quarter, we had two starters out with three fouls each. We dug ourselves into a big hole during that second quarter."

Both teams put up 17 points in the third quarter. Lake Hamilton trailed, 43-22, to start the fourth.

"I was really proud of the heart the girls showed after halftime," Richards said. "Being down, 26-5, at halftime is tough.

"Shots weren't falling and early foul trouble created a lot of adversity for the girls to overcome. It would have been easy to just lay down and quit, but they fought to the final buzzer. I love that about this team. They just don't quit. They're fighters."

Boys

Lake Hamilton's junior high boys were the No. 5 seed in their bracket, but they were defeated, 57-42, by top-seeded North Little Rock on Wednesday.

The junior Wolves ended the season with a record of 20-5.

Ethan Watson led Lake Hamilton with 12 points, Chase Jessup had 10 and Hayden McDougal scored six. Gavin Robbins and Zac Pennington each added five points.

Greyhounds hand Nighthawks

most lopsided loss of season

WEST MEMPHIS -- The National Park College men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak extinguished on Thursday as Arkansas State University Mid-South raced past the Nighthawks for a 43-point win, 101-58.

All five of the losses this season for National Park College (14-5, 0-5) have come against other teams in Region 2 of Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The previous worst loss for the Nighthawks was a 15-point defeat to North Arkansas College (19-9, 3-2).

Both of the Pioneers' conference losses have come to Mid-South (18-6, 4-1). The Greyhounds won, 78-75, at The Kettle inside the NPC Wellness Center on Jan. 24.

A back-and-fourth battle through the game's first 11 minutes gave way to a double-digit lead for Mid-South on Thursday. The Greyhounds surged to a 49-23 advantage by halftime.

Sophomore point guard Seth Duke, of Gravette, scored nine points in the second half, but the Greyhounds remained aggressive and added another 52 points. Duke led the Nighthawks with 12 points, while sophomore forward Braylon Steen, of Bryant, added 10 points.

National Park College has four more games left in the regular season. The Nighthawks will be the road team in all four games, beginning with a 7 p.m. game on Thursday at Arkansas Baptist College (8-17) in Little Rock.
