Scenic 7 hears about Cigar Box Men

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Capping off his month as club program chair, Keith Goudy recently introduced speaker Garland County Justice of the Peace Jimmy Young to The Rotary Club of North Garland County/Scenic 7.

Young, author of the book "Cigar Box Men," can trace his family roots back to the 1860s in north Garland County. Recounting colorful stories from the county's history, he claims relatives who at one time were on both sides of the law.

Hot Springs is now a genteel community, Young pointed out. That was not always true, however. There was once an infamous shootout in downtown between members of the sheriff's department and members of the police department, which resulted in five deaths, the club said in a news release.

Visitors are welcome at the Scenic 7 Rotary Club meetings, which are held at Charlie's Pizza Pub at noon on Thursdays. Call Amanda Kennedy, 501-922-0227, for more information.
