General Society War of 1812 elects new officers

The General Society War of 1812, State of Arkansas, elected new officers at its January meeting.

The new officers are George Mitchell, president; John Tatum, secretary/treasurer; Eugene Smith, registrar; and Bill Shepherd, historian.

The featured speaker at the meeting was Kay Tatum, Arkansas Society president, United States Daughters of 1812.

The relatively new society was chartered in 2014 and since then has partnered with U.S.D. 1812 in grave marking ceremonies, veterans' receptions and other patriotic events. Members of GSW1812 reside in all areas of Arkansas.

Mitchell, a Pine Bluff native, has held offices in many Arkansas societies. In addition to GSW1812, he is currently president of the Arkansas Genealogical Society; past president of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society in Pine Bluff; a member of the Arkansas Pioneers; Sons of the American Revolution; Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge; First Families of Tennessee; First Families of Maryland;, and the Flagon and Trencher Society, a news release said.

The General Society of the War of 1812 is an American nonprofit corporation and charitable organization of male descendants of American veterans of the War of 1812. The General Society was founded in 1854, at the Congress Hall in Philadelphia. In time, the General Society chartered state societies throughout the United States and remains the pre-eminent hereditary society for male descendants of veterans of the War of 1812. Founded by actual veterans of the War of 1812, the society continues carrying out the goals to honor those men who so bravely served in that war.

Membership is open to men who are older than 18 and who are a lineal descendant of someone who served during the War of 1812, either in the army, navy, revenue-marine, or privateer service of the United States.
