Mediterranean Diet explored at Garland County Library

The Garland County Cooperative Extension office will present information about the "Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle Approach to Good Health" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave.

The program is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Register by visiting http://www.gclibrary.com or by calling the library at 501-623-4161.

Alison Crane, family and consumer science agent for the Garland County Cooperative Extension office, will present more about this approach to healthy eating and provide some traditional foods to taste test.

"The Mediterranean diet is more than just eating foods and beverages traditionally consumed in countries along the Mediterranean Sea, it is a lifestyle approach to good health. It includes a balanced variety of fresh, locally-grown foods and daily exercise. While we will look to traditional recipes of the Mediterranean area, the goal is to adapt those principles of cooking to Arkansas tastes. Recipes emphasize ways to lower saturated fat intake, using healthy oils to increase monounsaturated and omega-3 fats, and using herbs and spices for seasoning to cut down on salt," Crane said in a news release.

The library notes in the release that it does not endorse any particular diets.
