Fire officials urge July Fourth safety

SAFETY FIRST: Warning labels on 12-inch Missiles are shown as Devon Hood, left, and Garrett Cook, both of Hot Springs, shop at a fireworks stand in the 5000 block of Central Avenue on Wednesday.
The crackle of firecrackers is a familiar sound this time of year, but even the most innocuous fireworks can pose a threat to personal safety, or create a fire, if used improperly.

While it is legal to discharge fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county, Lake Hamilton Fire Department Chief Matt Simpson says to be certain to follow the manufacturer’s directions that are printed on the devices.

Typically, the directions will warn against using the fireworks indoors, using fireworks without adult supervision, or holding the devices by hand, Simpson said.
