‘Gleaning’ program helps JH with meals

Instead of throwing away unserved food, several Hot Springs restaurants are participating in a program to assist needy residents.

“We are part of a ‘gleaning program’ where we pick up food from some of the local restaurants,” Janie Smith, executive director of the Eleanor Klugh Jackson House for Crisis Intervention Services Inc., 705 Malvern, said Tuesday.

“They give us food that is left over from the previous day. It is quick frozen and we put it either in our lunch program or the food program where we give out groceries. If we get a frozen bag of sausage, or chicken, ...
