Longtime Navy nurse retires after 20 years

HARRISON – After 20 years of traveling the world with the Navy Nurse Corps, stitching up wounds and assisting in operating rooms across the country, Cmdr. Ruth Williams retired from service this spring at the age of 66.

With graying hair, blue jeans and a baby-blue shirt that compliments her blue eyes, Williams boasts just as much spunk as she did in 1989 when she first enlisted in the Nurse Corps as a reservist to meet the Navy’s critical nursing shortage.
