Funds approved for downtown police unit

City to receive more than $321,522 from federal grant


The city of Hot Springs is set to receive more than $321,522, which Police Chief Bobby Southard wants to use to create a downtown enforcement unit.

Paid through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the grant is being administered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Southard applied for the funds six months ago, but said the exact details of the grant, including “the parameters and money exchange,” won’t be known until Sept. 1. Afterward, the city has 90 days to accept or reject the offer.
