Jury selection plods along in TV anchor’s slaying

LITTLE ROCK – Jury selection has been slow in the trial of a man accused in the bludgeoning death of TV anchorwoman Anne Pressly.

By the end of Tuesday’s court session shortly before 6 p.m., 11 jurors had been chosen out of 12 jurors and two alternates needed.

Circuit Judge Chris Piazza and lawyers for both the defense and prosecution spent the first half of Tuesday questioning a batch of jurors, all of whom were excused. Two were let go because they opposed the death penalty.

Curtis Lavelle Vance of Mariana could receive the death penalty if he is convicted of capital murder for killing the KATV personality. Pressly, 26, was raped and beaten in her Little Rock home late on Oct. 20, 2008, and died five days later. Vance has pleaded not guilty.

Mass clinics give 170K-plus flu shots

The Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK – State health officials say 172,873 doses of seasonal and swine flu vaccine were given in mass clinics around Arkansas late last week.

A news release Tuesday from the state Health Department said 148,961 doses of seasonal flu vaccine and 23,912 doses of vaccine against swine flu – also known as the H1N1 strain – were given to Arkansans on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Dr. Paul Halverson, director of the Health Department, said that, because of the extreme shortage of swine-flu vaccine, those doses were limited to children 6 months to 4 years, other children 5 to 18 with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women.

The release said that, as Arkansas gets more of the swine-flu vaccine, it will continue to be given to those priority groups first.
