JONESBORO – A starting cornerback for the Arkansas State football team is in police custody, recovering from a gunshot wound to his midsection after a man said he shot an intruder trying to break into an apartment.

ASU athletic officials declined to comment on the arrest of Paul Stephens, 22, except to say that “appropriate action” would be taken as more information becomes available.

Stephens was arrested early Saturday morning. A police report said he was taken to St. Bernards Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
