A former local man charged with capital murder for the shooting death of his estranged girlfriend last year was found to be mentally fit to proceed with trial after a hearing Friday in Garland County Circuit Court.

Calvin Washington Jr., 27, who listed a Pine Bluff address at the time of his arrest the day of the shooting Oct. 4, was found to be mentally competent after an evaluation April 8 at the Arkansas State Hospital and Judge Marcia Hearnsberger ruled to accept the findings. A pre-trial hearing for Washington is now set for Sept. 1.
