Paraphrasing Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, Tom Watson’s collapse in the British Open Sunday was one giant crash for mankind.

“It was horrible,” said Kelly Millender, a former Jessieville High and University of Georgia golfer. “When he missed that putt, it was the first time all week you saw his nerves. It wasn’t pretty.”

Watson trudged home in a four-way playoff against fellow American Stewart Cink, one having made a putt for the ages and the other missing one for golf’s AARP circuit.
