PEARCY -- It took a meet record by a Class 7A team for Lake Hamilton's strong girls 4x800-meter relay squad to fall for the first time this spring.
Conway's foursome of Brenn Lee, Elise Moix, Shakyra Smith and Lauren Campbell broke the 10-minute Friday night at the Lake Hamilton Invitational, running away in 9:59.91 at Bank of the Ozarks Field. The Lady Wampus Cats defeated the second-place Lady Wolves while breaking their 2002 mark of 10:06.68.
Lake Hamilton's squad of Josie Carson, London Martin, Morgan Pruitt and Kami Ward clocked 10:23.36, coach Karl Koonce said.
"We had a good performance there," Koonce said. "Most of our girls had (personal records), and we back Josie off a little bit in the last lap. We knew she couldn't catch her, so we just had her relax a little bit. She could've run a little faster. And so if we have to, we can go faster.
"But that's a big record to break there. Not too many girls break 10 minutes in the 4x800 relay. Especially this time of the year. It's usually the state meet or the Meet of Champs for that, so Conway was big in that."
The 4x800 win was the highest point of the Lady Wampus Cats' meet-high 127.5-point effort. Bryant (109) was second followed by Lake Hamilton (89.5) in third.
Cabot took the boys title with 94. Conway outpointed Lake Hamilton 69-68 for second place.
Lake Hamilton had several winners on both of its squads, beginning with Nick Johnson in the boys pole vault at 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Johnson, who broke the school record during indoor season (17-2), bounced back from his no-height effort three weeks ago at the Texas Relays for a comfortable victory.
"He's had some issues the last two or three weeks," Koonce said. "This is a step back upward, and the confidence factor, especially in pole vaulting, that's a big step there. Just to be able to vault. He was having some trouble with some runthroughs and all that, so this is a step in the right direction."
Lake Hamilton also won the girls pole vault, Madison Shinn in 11-6.
"We considered her for the outstanding-performer award," Koonce said. "Three more inches for her qualifies her for the Emerging Elite national championships, and 12-2 would get her into the (USA Track & Field) national championships. She had a very outstanding performance."
Eli Jackson, another school record holder from this year's Lakeside Ram Relays (57-7), had a winning throw of 55-9 in the shot put. Sophomore teammate William Burgess was second with a personal best of 49-6 1/2.
Jackson also earned six points with a third-place discus throw of 135-11.
"Eli is the kind of guy who wants to do it better every time he throws," Koonce said. "He's a very intense competitor."
Koonce said he was pleasantly surprised Freya Barrett won the girls shot put at 34-6, thinking she was his 'B' team thrower heading into the meet. Barrett thus qualified for the 6A meet May 5 at Benton.
Emily Brock gave the Lady Wolves three field victories, winning the triple jump in 34-4 3/4 despite a significant headwind.
Sophomore Carson (30), two-time reigning 6A cross country champion, accounted for the most Lady Wolf points, running four events for the first time this season. She was second in the 800 (2:28.24) and third in the 1,600 (5:27.85), running the 4x800 and the second-place 4x400 (4:28.75) along with Mercedes Jenkins, Martin and Stormie Owens.
"The 1,600 was the second-best time she's ever run," Koonce said. "She didn't break 5:30 until last year at the Meet of Champs. The 800 was pretty respectable after that. She had a good leg on the mile relay. She had to back off on the 4x800 or she could've run a personal best in that split. Because we knew she was quadrupling, I said just finish."
Lake Hamilton wasn't the only school with a top-three finish, Hot Springs' Joe Sartini (2:02.36) finishing third in the boys 800.
Lake Hamilton now directs its attention to postseason, gearing up for the 6A-South meet April 28 at Texarkana.
"We've still got a lot of work to do," Koonce said.
