Garland County teams fall in Shootout consolations

Three Garland County basketball teams were defeated in consolation games of the Chartwells Spa City Shootout on Saturday, the final day of the tournament.

Lakeside (3-8, 0-0 5A-South) kept it close with Sylvan Hills (10-2, 0-0 5A-Central) throughout the first half, trailing just 28-27 at the break. The Bears pulled away in the second half for a 62-44 victory in the third-place game at Bank OZK Arena.

Sylvan Hills was ranked No. 5 in Class 5A in the final Arkansas Sports Media Boys' High School Basketball Poll before the holiday break. The Bears sank seven 3-pointers against the Rams.

"They are going to shoot a lot of threes," said Lakeside head boys' basketball coach Eddie Lamb. "That is what Sylvan Hills does.

"It doesn't mean they are going to make them all. They are just going to make the rebound. We weren't tough on the boards. They are athleti, but that just means that we have got to be tougher."

Lakeside will open its conference schedule on the road on Friday at El Dorado (4-7).

Greenwood 47,

Mountain Pine 39

Mountain Pine held a halftime lead on Saturday, but the Red Devils were unable to hold off Greenwood in the fifth-place game.

The Red Ded Devils (8-8, 5-2 1A-7) led the Bulldogs (3-9, 0-0 5A-West), 21-17, at halftime, but were outscored 30-18 in the second half.

"We couldn't make shots," said Mountain Pine head basketball coach LaMont Page. "If we don't make our outside shots, then we are a totally different team. We had good (shots) at the basket. Basketball is about putting it in the hole.

"We showed that we can be in the game with them," Page added. "For the majority of the game. Free throws killed us."

Mountain Pine is scheduled for a home non-conference game against Prescott (5-2, 1-2 3A-7) on Friday before resuming conference play on Jan. 8 at Mineral Springs (3-5, 2-4). Seven of the nine members of the 1A-7 already have eight wins or more.

Sylvan Hills 46,

Fountain Lake 36

Sylvan Hills took third place in the girls' bracket of the Shootout with a 46-36 victory against Fountain Lake on Saturday at Bank OZK Arena.

Fountain Lake head girls' basketball coach Chris Mungle said the Lady Cobras (5-12, 0-5 3A-4) were unable to match up with the athleticism of Sylvan Hills (7-4, 0-0).

The Lady Bears held narrow margins in every quarter, outscoring the Lady Cobras 9-6, 11-7, 13-12 and 13-11, respectively.

"We moved the ball very well, but we didn't shoot it very well," Mungle said. "We got to the free throw line quite a bit, but we have got to convert more free throws and we can't get beat on the boards.

Junior forward Emoree Martin led the Lady Cobras with 12 points. Sophomore Presley Hamric added 11 points.

Fountain Lake is next scheduled for a conference game at Perryville (8-7, 1-4) on Jan. 8.
