From Her

Summer has officially come to an end, but the fun doesn't have to end just because school is back in session. One of the many perks that come with living in Arkansas is the few extra weeks of summer sun this time of year. So kick off your work shoes and grab your flip-flops and floaty as you hang on to the last days of summer just a little bit longer.

On the cover of this month's issue is a program known as Wake the World, specifically its adaptive program spearheaded by Bridgette and James Eason. The program was designed to offer underprivileged children the opportunity to experience water sports, but the program developed an adaptive portion that allows people who rely on wheelchairs and walkers for mobility the same experience. One of only two adaptive programs in the nation, Wake the World Arkansas takes people on life-changing boat rides every summer. The program takes place each year at Mountain Harbor Resort in Mount Ida on Lake Ouachita. Participants from across the state and even from other states spent one Monday morning shredding the wake and cracking some big smiles.

HER also caught up with the only female tattoo artist in Hot Springs, Ashley Wilkerson. For the past 11 years, Wilkerson has worked hard to establish herself as an artist when it comes to her work with a tattoo gun. After breaking into the boy's club of tattooing in Hot Springs, Wilkerson began making a name for herself with her traditional style and creativity. She has even tattooed her own body on a few occasions. Wilkerson lays it all out on the table and explains how and why she ended up inking up skin in the Spa City. She also explained a bit about her style of tattooing and how each tattoo she does is truly a one-of-a-kind work of inked up art.

You might find this issue honing in a bit more on things to do rather than the faces or organizations around town as you flip through the pages, but that's the point -- it's time to relax! With the kids back in school, many parents find themselves with a little more time to pamper themselves. Unique Nails specializes in exactly this type of pampering. With a full-service nail salon at superior quality, Unique Nails is the place to go to keep your toes stylish in sandals and your nails looking simply unique.

The "dog-days" of summer hold a wealth of opportunities for last-minute memories and spur-of-the-moment weekend activities that make summers memorable when looking back years later. Don't let the calendar fool you, there is still plenty of fun to be had in Hot Springs. So take to the water, the trails or whichever activity venue suits you best and soak up the last days of summer. As always, we hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. Until next time,
