Lake Hamilton student returns from forum

PEARCY -- Lake Hamilton Intermediate School fifth-grader Riley Connell, of Hot Springs, recently returned from Envision's National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM at the University of Denver.

"NYLF: Pathways to STEM is for bright, forward-thinking elementary school students who will evolve into next-generation innovators, engineers, doctors, software developers, and scientists," a news release announcing Riley's selection for the program said.

"I just like solving crimes, and I want to help people to solve crimes to figure out who this person is and what family they come from," Riley said.

Activities from the camp included leadership, goal setting and team building workshops, programming classes, medical training for malnutrition, heat exhaustion and snake bites, robot building, fingerprinting labs and forensics.

"I don't think she really understood how important was until we went through the potential doors it could open. At that point she was really excited," Riley's grandmother, Catherine Connell, said.

"This helped bring her out of her shell. I think it was a confidence builder."

As a program participant, Riley received a certificate to include with college applications and the opportunity to return to the program as an alumni.
