A reportedly homeless man was arrested on multiple charges early Tuesday after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and trying to suffocate her with a pillow.

Jay Daniels English, 23, who lists "city streets" as his address, was taken into custody shortly after midnight and charged with a felony count of aggravated assault on a family or household member, punishable by up to six years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of violation of a no-contact order, first-degree criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, each punishable by up to one year in jail.

English was being held on $6,500 bond and is set to appear today in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday, Hot Springs police Officer 1st Class Tifani McCauley responded to the Valero, 3228 Central Ave., regarding an assault and spoke to a woman who stated her ex-boyfriend, identified as English, had attacked her earlier at her Higdon Ferry Road apartment.

She said English had arrived at her apartment around 8:15 p.m. and became angry at one point, throwing items, choking her and throwing her against the wall. She said he threw a burning candle at her, causing hot wax to spray onto her shirt and pushed her down on the bed and choked her with both hands around her neck.

She said at one point he used a pillow to hold her down, placing it over her entire face. She said he also pushed her against the wall and choked her with both hands a second time while pressing her against the wall. She said he had ripped up two pillows and a blanket with a total value of $70. McCauley noted she saw no redness or bruising around the woman's neck.

Officers went to the woman's apartment and located English standing in the kitchen and took him into custody. During a search of his person, a package with 2.8 grams of marijuana was found in his pocket.

On Jan. 28, 2019, English had pleaded guilty in district court to a misdemeanor count of aggravated assault on a family member involving the same woman and was sentenced to four days in jail and six months probation and a court order barring him from contact with the woman was issued.

On Feb. 21, English was arrested again for allegedly assaulting the same woman and charged with second-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. He was later released on $10,000 bond. The charge was later amended to third-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to six years, and bound over to Garland County Circuit Court where English is scheduled for a disposition hearing on Sept. 23. A no contact order was again issued.
