After serving in the position for only six months, Tremayne White resigned as principal of Hot Springs World Class High School as of Monday.

"Dr. Tremayne White submitted his resignation as Hot Springs World Class High School Principal to pursue other opportunities that would afford him more time with his family," Superintendent Stephanie Nehus said in an email Tuesday.

"The Hot Springs School District School Board met (Monday) and accepted his resignation effective immediately," Nehus said, noting Kiley Simms has been named as the acting high school principal.

"We are working to make this as smooth of a transition as possible for our students and staff members," Nehus said.

Adriane Barnes, the school's communications and public relations coordinator, said White's resignation was a surprise to the administrative team and it was his own decision.

"Although it was not an easy decision to make, it is one that I have contemplated for some time now; and I am confident that it was the best decision for me and my family," White said in an email to students obtained by The Sentinel-Record.

"This decision allows me to pursue opportunities that will afford me more time to spend with my family," the email said.

White's resignation was brought to the school board Monday night, making it official.

Barnes said the school plans a news release about Simms being named the new principal, noting Simms accepted the position Tuesday.

The administration team was lucky to have someone like Simms, who has a strong foundation of integrity and good leadership skills within the school, Barnes said, noting she has a wonderful relationship with the students.

"There is not going to be a pause or a discontinuation of learning or growth at the Hot Springs World Class High School. So, we are not slowing down. We were surprised, but we are not going to slow down. We are going to keep moving forward and we have every bit of trust in Mrs. Simms and Mr. (William) Brazle," Barnes said.

Brazle was named assistant principal, Barnes said, and the school district will be advertising a position for another assistant principal.

Barnes said the district will miss White because he brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, noting it was wonderful for the district to have another opinion on the leadership team.

"He was compassionate to our kids. He was passionate about education and we appreciate the time that he was here," Barnes said.

White said in an email to students that he has enjoyed the interactions and conversations with them and seeing the process of the students realizing their dreams and helping them get there.

"I want you all to remain focused on your dreams, and when you dream, always dream B.I.G. -- Believe, Inspire, and Go-forth; knowing that in doing so you will be able to overcome any challenge or obstacle that you may encounter," White said.

"In addition, always be determined to build others up as opposed (to) tearing people down. In doing so, you will do your part in making people and our world better," he said.

"I encourage each of you to NEVER give up; and to always know ... regardless of how bad things may be or become, you have what it takes to overcome."
