HS teams hold off El Dorado

EL DORADO -- Hot Springs' senior high boys' and girls' basketball teams earned hard-fought road victories Friday ahead of Tuesday's home date with Lake Hamilton.

Sophomore guard Jaylia Reed made two free throws with five seconds remaining in the game to lift the Lady Trojans (7-6, 3-0 5A-South) to a 44-42 win. She scored 17 points in the game, shooting 11-for-11 at the free throw line.

Hot Springs needed a fourth-quarter comeback to get into position for the win. El Dorado (11-4, 2-1) led, 13-12, after the first quarter and took a 26-16 lead into halftime. The Lady Trojans cut into the lead in the third quarter to make it 33-26 and outscored the Lady Wildcats, 18-9, in the final frame.

Sophomore Jurnee Hicks added eight points, all in the second half. Seniors Kiah Beauford and Bre Collins each finished with six points.

Hot Springs will be at home on Tuesday to face Lake Hamilton (10-4, 3-0) at Trojan Fieldhouse. They are the last two remaining undefeated teams in 5A-South conference play.

Lake Hamilton handed Sheridan (14-1, 2-1) its only loss of the season, 55-47, on Jan. 4 and Lakeside (13-3, 0-3) its second loss of the year, 60-45, on Tuesday. The Lady Wolves won, 61-38, on Friday at home against J.A. Fair (1-12, 0-3).

Boys

Hot Springs' senior high boys used another balanced scoring effort to hold off El Dorado, 71-66, Friday.

Junior forward Santiair Thomas led the Trojans (15-2, 3-0) with 22 points, while sophomores J.J. Walker and Caleb Campbell added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman center Jabari West scored eight points and junior Kaleb Hughley scored seven.

"We didn't play our best basketball and must continue to lock in every night," commented Hot Springs head boys' basketball coach Antoni Lasker. "Give El Dorado kids credit, they took it to us."

The Wildcats are 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the 5A-South.

Hot Springs will be at home inside Trojan Fieldhouse on Tuesday to host Lake Hamilton (12-2, 3-0), the only other team in the conference without a league loss. The Wolves won, 57-43, against J.A. Fair (6-8, 1-2) on Friday at Wolf Arena.

Lake Hamilton is scheduled to host Hot Springs in Pearcy on Feb. 8.
