Christian recording artist to present concert at Ouachita Jan. 29

ARKADELPHIA -- Ouachita Baptist University will host Christian recording artist Allen Asbury for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Jones Performing Arts Center.

This concert is free and open to the public.

A contemporary Christian recording artist with Doxology Record Company, Allen Asbury has had four No. 1 hits and seven top 10 songs. His recording "Somebody's Praying Me Through" became the Presidential Prayer Team's theme song and National Day of Prayer theme in 2003. Other hits include "The Light of That City," "All About Grace" and "This Is My Father's World," according to a news release from the university.

Asbury also portrayed the part of Simon Peter in the award-winning musical "The Promise" over 3,000 times. Those productions began in Glen Rose, Texas, continued for six years in Branson, Mo., and also toured internationally, including performances at the Kremlin State Palace in Russia, at the Olympic Stadium in Korea and in New York City -- as well as in churches and arenas across the U.S., the release said.

"Allen embodies all that should be part of being a successful Christian singer, and I wanted our campus community to have the opportunity to hear his beautiful, clarion tenor voice," said Jon Secrest, Ouachita's Addie Mae Maddox Professor of Music and coordinator of vocal studies.

"His love for the Lord is clearly evident in his singing and also in his daily walk," Secrest added. "He is a wonderful role model for our students who aspire to have careers in this field of vocal performance and wish to be vital members of the family of God. Allen has literally blessed thousands and thousands of people through his thoughtful, heartfelt singing and spiritual encouragement."

Asbury earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian ministries from West Coast Christian College in Fresno, Calif. He currently lives with his family in Branson, Mo., where he serves as minister of music at Grace Community Assembly.

"In concert, his energy is infectious and energizing to the crowd. The audience will truly be 'at church' with Allen leading us in worship," Secrest said. "He plans to bring a live ensemble of seven talented musicians with him. The live concert experience will be outstanding."

This concert is free and open to the public. Email Secrest at [email protected] or call 870-245-5134 for more information.
