Local Hoop Shoot set for Saturday

Hot Springs Elks Lodge No. 380 will hold its annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest Sunday at Hot Springs World Class High School at 2 p.m.

The annual event is free and open to children ages 8-13 with three age groups -- 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Age is determined by the age the participant will be on April 1.

Following a short warm-up period, shooters will shoot 10 free throws. After all shooters have completed their initial 10 shots, shooters will take to the line for an additional 15 shots. If there is a tie after all 25 shots have been taken, shooters who are tied will take an additional 5 shots each until a winner is determined.

The local winners will then compete against winners from the remaining 12 lodges in the state contest, which will be held at Hot Springs Intermediate School on Feb. 9. State winners will advance to the four-state regional competition in Paducah, Ky., on March 16 to compete against winners from Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee.

Regional winners will advance to the national contest on April 16 in Chicago. The national champions will have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
