Tidwell among nominees for GAC weekly awards

RUSSELLVILLE -- The Great American Conference league officed announced this week Hot Springs alum Berniezha Tidwell earned a nomination for the league's Women's Basketball Player of the Week award.

Tidwell averaged 13 points and seven rebounds in a pair of home defeats for Arkansas-Monticello (4-9, 3-5). She transferred to Monticello this season from Highland Community College in Kansas where she competed for a season in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Forward Karrington Whaley shot 68.3 percent while averaging 12.5 points and eight rebounds as Henderson State (11-4, 6-3) split its weekend home games at the Duke Wells Center.

Ouachita Baptist guard Madison Brittain totaled 31 points and six steals on Thursday and Saturday as the Tigers (5-9, 3-5) also split their games at Bill Vining Arena.

Former Watson Chapel forward Jerica Bell hit 13 of 22 field goal attempts to average 15 points per game last week for Southern Arkansas (1-13, 0-8). Bell and former Hot Springs guard Ariana Guinn are the team's leading scorers as freshmen.

Southeastern Oklahoma State junior guard Katie Webb was named the GAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The other nominees were East Central guard Madison Rehl, Harding forward Kennedy Cooper, Oklahoma Baptist guard Autumn Avina, Southern Nazarene guard Adrienne Berry and Southwestern Oklahoma State guard Tyra Aska.

Henderson forward Mike Fofana scored a career-high 23 points for the Reddies (10-5, 5-4) in an 85-73 win against Northwestern Oklahoma State (3-11, 0-7). He completed his bid for Player of the Week honors with a double-double in a 70-62 victory on Saturday against Southwestern (3-11, 0-8).

Ouachita guard Mahlon Martin averaged 15 points in two weekend games for the Tigers (6-6, 3-5). He hit the game-winning basket on Saturday for a 62-61 home victory on Saturday at Bill Vining Arena.

Oklahoma Baptist sophomore guard Brantly Thompson was announced as the GAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Also nominated were Arkansas Tech guard R.J. Glasper, East Central forward Da'Rion King, Harding guard Romen Martin, Monticello forward Darnell Wright, Southern Arkansas forward Wesley Nosakhare and Southern Nazarene center Noah Starkey.
