Literacy Council offers training

The Literacy Council will provide an Introduction to Tutoring for potential volunteers from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Council Office at 119 Hobson Ave.

"If you have ever wondered what it would take to become a tutor, this will give you an introduction to the possibilities. The Literacy Council of Garland County has been helping people improve their reading ability for free with the help of our dedicated volunteer tutors for over 35 years. This is a chance for interested people to come and discuss the possibilities of becoming a tutor and mentor to one of our students," a news release said.

The council, through donations, provides the materials, the encouragement, the students, and the space, if needed, to tutor. "The volunteers supply the passion, commitment and the concern for the Garland County citizens who cannot read or need improvement. In return, the volunteers make new friends, add extended family members, and make a major difference in a student's life," the release said.

"Through tutoring, the student can improve their ability to enter the workforce, take the next step to going for a GED, and keep a job with the new skill. All that with the sacrifice of just a couple of hours a week."

REGARD potluck set for Monday

The REGARD's annual potluck will be held on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, at the Webb Community Center. The public is welcome to attend.

Meat, plates, cups, drinks and utensils will be provided by REGARD. Bring a dish to pass and a dessert. There is no cost for the program, and reservations are not necessary. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.

The program will include "Upbeat Beats" with Denise Marion, who will lead community-building rhythm games, which are fun, interactive, noncompetitive games that establish trust in and connections with each other through hands-on rhythm activities rather than language. Body beats, movement and song, as well as percussion instruments, will be used, as a way to end several days of tributes to King.

The mission of REGARD -- Recognizing Everybody's Gifts and Respecting Diversity -- is to build connections and cooperation; to promote understanding, appreciation, respect and fellowship; and to celebrate the richly diverse population in Hot Springs and Garland County.
