15th annual George Washington Birthday Luncheon set for Feb. 22

The 15th annual George Washington Birthday Luncheon will be held Feb. 22 at Hot Springs Country Club.

The featured speaker will be professor Angela Boswell, who will give a presentation on "Martha and George Washington Form a New Nation."

Boswell is the dean of the Matt Locke Ellis College of Arts of Sciences and professor of History at Henderson State University. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in history from Rice University.

Boswell's teaching and research focus on Southern history, particularly pre-Civil War. She has taught women's history and Colonial and early American courses at Henderson for 20 years. She is the author of the recently released book "Women in Texas History" published by Texas A&M University Press, which has won the Robert A. Calvert Book Prize. She has also authored an earlier prizewinning book on Texas women, "Her Act and Deed: Women's Lives in a Rural Southern County, 1837-73," and has coedited three volumes on Southern women's history, including "Women in Civil War Texas."

"The annual George Washington Birthday Luncheon is known for the excellent speakers and is regularly attended by people across the state. Each year presentations are given by renowned speakers who have researched a little-known area, event or characteristic of George Washington's life," a news release said.

The $22 "paid reservations only" must be received no later than Feb. 8. The event is limited seating and no "walk-ins." Make checks payable to Akansa Chapter NSDAR and mail to Frankie Ochsner, 211 Brown Drive No. 6, Hot Springs, AR 71913-2089. Seating will begin at 11 a.m. and the luncheon and program will start at 11:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend. Colonial costumes are optional.

The colonial era heritage societies group is comprised of hereditary societies such as the Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames 17th Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, New England Women, Jamestowne Society, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Mayflower Society, Dames of the Court of Honor and other lineage groups representing the American time period of 1607-1776.
