Sunday's Letters to the Editor

Love the 'Wall Mall'

Dear editor:

I absolutely love Charles Wilson's Wall Mall! It is the very best solution I have heard for our southern border problem.

It's a win-win-win-win-win-win: win for Trump, win for USA, win for Mexico, win for business, win for workers, and win for nature. It makes me happy just to think about, and that's a long way from how I feel about any of the other ideas being fought over right now.

I hope it goes viral.

Praise for 'Pocket'

Dear editor:

In the midst of all the negative turmoil of our national government, it is heartwarming to see positive things happening in our good state and in our city.

I should like to thank James Kendall, new President of Pocket Community Theatre, and all those who helped him carry on after the bold robbery three weeks before the opening of the Christmas show.

Pocket has been a special place for me since I began acting in the first location at the Outlet Mall (now Temperance Hill) in 1995. I acted in plays at all three locations until my spinal stenosis caused numbness in my legs without notice. My last performance was "Arsenic and Old Lace" in, I think, 2012. I actually directed their first musical at the second location on Higdon Ferry Road, a spoof on Agatha Christy's plays. I think that was 2001.

I have acted in many HSU productions and served as co-founder of Arkadelphia Little Theatre, along with three performances with the Benton "Royal Players" and one with the Little Rock Community Theatre. Among all these productions, some of the very best have been at Pocket.

Hot Springs is blessed by having a theater to serve the interests of those patrons who enjoy live productions. The outflow of help shown after the robbery demonstrates the care and need of such an institution as Pocket. I have contributed much in the past, physically and financially, and plan to continue attending as much as health allows and giving to special project needs. I do hope others will remain committed to sharing their resources as well.

It is fitting that Pocket's first production be in honor of Gene Forsyth. He and Margaret have been mainstays for years and both have been dear friends of mine. Thanks again to James and his volunteer staff for their dedication.

A Saudi wall?

Dear editor:

While reading Mary Robinson's last letter, I thought "here we go again, another angry tirade." Unless you are CCR, (Conservative-Christian-Republican) you are a target for her disdain. After all "haters gonna hate." I finally got to her last point and surprisingly enough found something that made sense. She quoted Sean Spicer as saying "one murder is too many." I totally agree as I am sure the friends and relatives of Jamal Khashoggi do also. Perhaps we should build a wall around Saudi Arabia or at least some of their embassies.

Impudent Trump

Dear editor:

Our impudent President Trump has shut down the government for months, perhaps years, to build a $5.6 billion wall to stop immigrants from entering our country.

"Fixed fortifications are monuments to men's stupidity. If mountain ranges and oceans can be overcome anything made by man can be overcome." -- Gen. George Patton.

We've survived without this wall; his priorities are imperceptible!

It's an appalling abomination that hundreds of thousands of people will be affected, due to his malevolent, ambiguous attitude! (from unpaid government funded workers, food banks and government funded operations, etc., etc., etc.) Not to mention total disregard for "The Constitution" and compassion for us citizens. But Vice President Pence and numerous other political appointees will each receive a $10,000 raise.

While the government is "shutdown" what's going to happen to 401Ks that the working class has invested into for years, while the stock market is questionable as like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. What about tax returns? Will interest be added? Highly doubtful. ...

If you are an American, your heritage is either Native American, slave refugee or immigrant. That's it.

Apparently, the hardworking Americans, the "backbone" of this country are insignificant!

This country's appointed politicians can live a luxurious life (deep pockets and all) and are set for life at the American people's expense.

It may be an old cliché, but "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer!"

One can only imagine how $5.6 billion could vastly improve this country.

The elderly could afford both their medications and food.

House the homeless.

Feed the poor.

And give our veterans and their families the treatment they "so" deserve for they valiantly defended this great country without as much as a "cautious attentiveness" from our government!

God help us.

Bible teachings

Dear editor:

The "Wall is not a solution" by Bill Wiedmann on Tuesday, Jan. 8, gave me reason to reply to the gentleman. I am most glad that you stated in your 20s you read the Bible completely through, but I wonder did you have a teacher or pastor to explain what you were reading? I'm almost 63 years old and for the last possibly 10 years, I've been reading the Bible through each year. As a former Sunday school teacher for children and adults, I find the Bible to be one of the best teachers of human nature possible. Each year I read a different version; King James, New King James (best when teaching children), New Living Translation and the Catholic Bible, rotating year upon year. Do I believe the Bible was inspired by God? Absolutely.

Your statement, "Today, we need a new myth which is more in line with what we now know." I find this so much what the "politically correct generation" is looking for. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but God says "I am the same yesterday, today and forever." There is no science that can produce the uniqueness of this planet or in my opinion the universe. This is no myth, this is our lives, no man or woman can change that. Your conscience can fool you, just as advice from a scholar can. Wise men have gone to their graves as fools, all the education in the world is nothing but a tool to say you can learn. Education in a classroom is quite different from life experiences, yet both are an education. This generation says a college degree is what is needed, but look at the latest, shall I say "fools" elected to Congress. They seem to have forgotten exactly what American history is.

Your quote "The world needs leaders who see and understand three pressing problems: one, the threat of nuclear war; two, the threat of global warming; and three, the threat of biotech making much of mankind irrelevant." I shall address these for you; one, nuclear war is coming, all you need to know that that is true, read your Old Testament Prophets and the Book of Revelation; two, the threat of global warming is a hoax. How do I know this you ask, God controls the weather, man can create waste that destroys the planet, but whether you get an ice age or a blazing hot season, that's in God's hands. The Bible even describes that in the end times there will be earthquakes and disasters in diverse places. So stop believing in the lie that humans are going to create global warming. And to your third point, according to my dictionary the word "biotechnology" means the use of data and techniques of engineering and technology for the study and solution of problems concerning living organisms. Also, the word "irrelevant" means not relevant; not pertinent; not to the point; not relating to the subject. Therefore my conclusion is, you simply need to turn off all your electronic devices and go back to a simpler way of life and stop worrying, no sense in having a heart attack over things you can't control.

I wish you well sir, and I make the suggestion that you find a Bible and do a study with people who know more than you. Thank you for your article, I found it very informative.
