Tickets now on sale for baseball-centric musical comedy

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Tickets are now on sale for the Hot Springs Village Players production of "Damn Yankees," directed by Craig Welle, Thursday-Sunday at Woodlands Auditorium and Aug. 3-4 at Fountain Lake High School Auditorium.

"'Damn Yankees' is the only successful musical comedy built around the American national pastime of baseball. Based on the book 'The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant,' by Douglass Wallop, 'Damn Yankees' is a musical comedy set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C., during a time when the New York Yankees dominated major league baseball. It has been described as 'a modern retelling of the Faust legend,'" a news release said.

The musical comedy won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. "The winning score by Adler and Ross and a devilish book by George Abbot have made this sporty musical comedy a true American classic," the release said. The show ran for 1,019 performances in its original 1955 Broadway production.

In the play, middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil (also known as Mr. Applegate) for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. "As young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series," the release said.
