Community's light shines

Dear editor:

The LightUptown Committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make the "Let Your Light Shine" Fundraiser and Variety Show on May 10 such a rousing success.

It is because of you, our wonderful friends and neighbors who committed their time, their talents and their treasures, that we will be able to purchase and "plant" an additional seven lights along Park Avenue.

PACA's "Light UpTown" project is in its second year of lining Park Avenue with historic-style street lights. The choice of Central Park-style vintage street lights complements downtown's historic lighting, becoming an attractive transition to UpTown Park Avenue. Our goal is to make our section of Scenic Highway 7, the original gateway to Hot Springs, a beautiful and welcoming invitation to visitors coming to our city, and to provide a safe environment for our growing neighborhoods.

Thank you for bringing us closer to our goal.

US in serious trouble

Dear editor:

Our country is in serious trouble and no one seems to realize the cost to the average taxpayer as he or she struggles to keep up with the cost of living. We have the biggest scoundrels in the history of our country running our government taking us for the biggest ride since the Gilded Age. The elite that had massive tax cuts are looking to take the rest of the country by storm, extracting all natural resources without cost of remediation. That can be handled by the taxpayer.

Mitch McConnell is in the catbird's seat to keep all of the 98 percent of us from doing anything to stop him. As Majority Leader of the Senate, he has the only word on what legislation passed by the House comes up for vote or cloture. Nothing gets past him. Nothing. He's not going to give up that power because since Donald Trump named his wife, Elaine Chao to Transportation secretary, Kentucky has received taxpayer-paid roads and bridges not given to the rest of the country. She was told to divest herself of all stock in a gravel and crushed rock company that is the biggest supplier of asphalt to the entire country. She did not.

Elaine Chao's father is a Chinese shipping magnate that has given millions to McConnell's campaign coffers. She travels between China and Washington, D.C., offering opportunities to meet the president.

Trump is not going to let a little thing like the House of Representatives keep him from doing business as usual. Refusing to acknowledge subpoenas issued by the House is of little concern to him. He's got conservative judges on all courts all the way to SCOTUS. He sees clear sailing ahead as he strips us of our resources and democracy.

The people need to understand our country is run by the oligarchs that can travel around the world without a passport or country of origin. We need to take our democracy back.

A sad reality

Dear editor:

Democrats: Hey Uncle Sam, we need trillions for welfare and Obama-care.

Uncle Sam: No problem.

Republicans: Hey Uncle Sam, we need trillions to start a war on terror including secret prison/torture camps.

Uncle Sam: No problem.

Jon Stewart: Hey Uncle Sam, our 9/11 responders need financial aid because they are dying from their heroic acts of bravery. In our time of great darkness, they were there for us.

Uncle Sam: Tears shed down his face. I am sorry, we are broke.

Me: What more could I say?
