Hot Springs Concert Band to honor first responders

Hot Springs Concert Band will honor police, firefighters, and EMTs with the concert "Heroes!" in Whittington Park on Monday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m.

"We want to invite all first responders and their families to come be recognized in an evening of music selected especially for them. The band purchased most of the music exclusively for this concert, music with names like Heroes and Legends and A Thousand Heroes," band member Kathy Skinner, who personally requested the concert for this year's summer series, said in a news release.

"We're asking our audience to contact first responders they know and invite them to come be honored. Let's show our community's appreciation for the people who are first on the scene when folks are in trouble."

The concert is sponsored by KVRE FM Radio 92.9.

The band's public relations director, Millie Gore Lancaster, said, "When KVRE FM radio found out about this concert, they said, 'We want to be the corporate sponsor for this!'"

This summer, 12 highly skilled college and high school musicians are playing with the Hot Springs Concert Band as they prepare for this special concert, the release said.

"Some of them play with us year-round," Lancaster said, "but others are here for the summer. When highly-skilled young, middle-aged, and senior citizen musicians come together to play, we have the true spirit of a community band. I've talked with community band musicians across the country, and you don't find this age diversity in many places."

The concert is free to the public. Donations will be accepted at stations outside of the audience seating and are "essential for the band to continue to be able to produce the concerts, which while free to the public, are expensive for the band to produce." Supporters can become Friends of the Band by making a donation of $25 or more.

Audience members should bring lawn chairs, plenty of water, and a "picnic to complete the evening under the magnolias."

Carpooling is recommended and parking is free, but prohibited on West Mountain Drive.
